CCA New York Announces Shep and Ian Murray from Vineyard Vines as their 2005 "Conservationists of the Year"

The Coastal Conservation Association has a long history of being a first class, grassroots organization whose mission is to protect local marine environments and their fisheries. The CCA, and in particular the New York Chapter, has been fortunate to team with Vineyard Vines over the last four years. This partnership has resulted in the CCA becoming a stronger, more recognized organization. At this time of year, we like to single out a person or company who has helped us in our mission by showing dedication and commitment to protecting New York's rivers, bays and harbors, which make up its marine estuary ecosystem. This year we have named Shep and Ian Murray, CEOs and Co-founders of Vineyard Vines, to be our 2005 "Conservationists of the Year". Past recipients have been David and Perk Perkins from the Orvis Company; Ted Williams, conservationist and writer; Andrew Wilner, the NY/NJ Bay Keeper; and Richard Regan, President of the Norcross Wildlife Foundation.

We will present this award at our Awareness Dinner, which is being held at New York City’s ‘21’ Club Restaurant on April 21st.

Through the efforts of groups like the CCA, the waters surrounding Manhattan have improved so greatly that it has made New York Harbor a world-class fishery. Much has been written about this recovery, yet millions of New Yorkers are still unaware that this resource supports over two hundred species. Our goal is to make more people aware of the value of this fantastic marine environment. Proceeds from the Awareness Dinner will benefit several Coastal Conservation Association projects, including the CCA Oyster Restoration Project, whereby oysters, a shellfish known to help purify water, will be re-populated near the Statue of Liberty.

The Awareness Dinner is scheduled as a precursor to the CCA Manhattan Cup fishing tournament. This year, the tournament’s seventh, is scheduled for May 13, 2005. This IGFA/Rolex tournament has gained a tremendous amount of attention as being the northeast’s premier inshore tournament.
